A GREAT SUCCESS!
The celebratory event held on November 10th, 2008, to commemorate our 10 years at 116 Ninth Street was a great success, and any member who visited us at 230 Jones Street during the last decade or so prior to our move can certainly understand our motivation for observing this milestone in our local’s history!
As a part of the occasion, the accomplishments of two deserving members were acknowledged. First, Local 6 honored the memory of the late Earl Watkins by officially dedicating its hall as the Earl Watkins Rehearsal Hall. Several members spoke in praise of Earl’s contributions to our local and to the larger labor community, and in gratitude for the encouragement he offered them with their musical careers. Then, in what was a surprise to no one in the room but her, the title of President Emeritus was conferred on Melinda Wagner in appreciation of her many years of service to the membership as board member, secretary-treasurer, and president. This tribute was especially timely since the move to our new building happened under her watch as president and was primarily the result of her diligence and determination.
Nearly 70 people, including more than 50 Local 6 members, enjoyed the camaraderie and the terrific music provided by members Richard Riccardi, Mario Suraci, and Bill Nawrocki. Guests included Earlaine and Bobby Williams (Earl Watkins’ daughter and son-in-law) and AFM secretary-treasurer Sam Folio. A good time was had by all.
